| Peelie again |
[27 Oct 2004|03:08pm] |
I'm in my second internet cafe of the day, shedding my second lot of tears for the day, at the news that Peelie is gone.
My first memory of hearing John Peel was one night in about April 1978, driving back from a tour of the Holy sites of East Anglia with my Dad (who was very religious). We spun the knob through the stations until we found John Peel, who was playing a Patrik Fitzgerald session. I think I tried to listen to him every night after that.
In those days he would often play a whole side of a new album when it came out. One such I remember was The Scream, the first Banshees album. It is to Peelie I owe my interest in, and knowledge of, African musics, Bulgarian folk, reggae, electronica, English folk, and even metal.

I wanted to say something about my second day in Melbourne, but I'm so gutted by the death of John Peel that I don't know what to say. He certainly changed the course of my life in a way that few others have.
I don't think he can ever really be replaced.

Spent yesterday trying to find a second-hand bicycle. I figured that now I'm up in Melbourne, which is reasonably flat, I should do more cycling. Went up to Ceres, but unfortunately, the bit which sells second hand bikes is only open on Friday and Saturday.
Other than that I am looking for somewhere to live for a few months. Anyone know of anyone looking for a flatmate for about three months in Melbs?

Roseanne is on TV1. I love that show. I used to always try and be home early on a Friday so that I could watch it. It's one of the few shows on American TV that features working-class families. Working class people.
I'm struggling to think of another - Drew Carey perhaps. What is it with all those annoying middle-class bastards ... the only other shows featuring working people are animated - The Simpsons andKing of the Hill. When I was a kid TV was always about ordinary people. Now it's full of kids driving 4WDs.

Just paid a visit to Reverse Garbage in Marrickville, which is one of my favourite places in Sydney. I was buying supplies for my garage sale on Saturday. I bought a big bag of bubble-wrap envelopes for $5, three massive peices of corflute for a dollar each, and three CDR containers for $2.
There is so much cool stuff there. You need hours and hours to go round it, but it sure is fun. And cheap too. I'd love to work somewhere like that. One of my new life resolutions - only work somewhere that you don't have to dress up.

A lot to do today.
Go to the recycling warehouse and see if there are any coreflute signs from the election that I can use for the garage sale. Pack some more of my boxes. Go and post some stuff I've sold on ebay. Try and see that football hooligan film with Elijah Wood.
I sold all my Mojos yesterday. 113 issues, weighed 53kg, and originally I sold them to a dude in the US, but when he heard how much it would cost to post them he backed out. So I sold them to a guy just down the road and delivered them to him. He seemed pretty happy.
I must budget. If I'm going to get a new Fostex, a tattoo and a bike, I need to work out my spending. I think if I can survive on $30 a day (surely not impossible) I can do it for about two and a half months. Then I need to find another job however crappy.

Tried to stay in all day and sort out my shit. Lots of boxes to pack. There is stuff to keep, stuff to sell, stuff to leave with L.
Spoke to her mother about the car. The parents will pay me any money I have paid towards the car loan, and then L can have the car.
In more creative news - I got a load of old maps, found the suburbs which I thought were coolest and cut them out, making badges with Redfern, Newtown, Kings Cross, Bondi on them. Will do the same with Melbourne suburbs when I get a Melbourne map. I did this last year with a map of the US and made my favourite badge - Detroit - I love that badge. I wore it most of the year along with my Johnny Cash one.
